The book (or perhaps an in-depth review article) will be addressed to graduate students in physics, mathematics, computer science, astrophysics and space physics. We are aware of no literature which critically re-examines the subject from first principles, but believe such a book to be long overdue. The book addresses all aspects of the scientific research process, including identifying weak and strong methodologies, it breaks through multiple disciplinary boundaries, and it serves as a pedagogical resource for students young and old.
